Challenge: Mapping complex ecosystem relationships

Understanding the complex relationships and distribution of startups in the Agritech sector was challenging for policymakers and investors. There was no centralized resource that provided a comprehensive view of the ecosystem, making it difficult to identify gaps, opportunities, and potential synergies.

The challenge was to create an intuitive, interactive visualization that could represent multiple dimensions of data while remaining accessible to non-technical users.

Approach: Data collection and visualization strategy

We collected data from various sources, including government databases, industry reports, and direct outreach to startups. This data was structured and stored in AirTable to allow for easy updates and management.

The visualization approach focused on geographical distribution, funding stages, technology categories, and interconnections between different entities in the ecosystem.

Solution: Interactive mapping platform

We developed a Streamlit application that provides:

An interactive map showing the geographical distribution of Agritech startups
Filtering capabilities by technology type, funding stage, and founding year
Detailed profiles for each startup with key metrics and contact information
Network visualization showing connections between startups, investors, and support organizations
Data export functionality for further analysis

The application is connected to AirTable, allowing administrators to update the underlying data without requiring technical knowledge.

Impact: Ecosystem transformation

The Startup Ecosystem Map has become a key resource for the Madrid Innovation Hub and is used by:

Policymakers to identify gaps in the ecosystem and design targeted support programs
